Membership in the ISCFS

Please review requirements: new application and dues/fees payment information below.

ISCFS Members are required to have:

 • Formal training by a team recognized internationally;
 • Publications in the field of Craniofacial surgery in the 24 months prior to application;
 • Performed a minimum number of intracraniofacial procedures per year.

Membership is by invitation. It is a privilege and not a right, and it is contingent upon continuing compliance with the bylaws of the ISCFS. No person shall be elected or remain a member unless he or she is of good moral character and adheres to accepted principals of medical ethics. Membership is not restricted to citizens of any specific country.


I. Eight classes of membership are available.

1) Founding Members

Founding Members have all the rights and duties of Active Members.


2) Active Members

Qualifications: Active members shall:

  • be legally qualified, reputable practicing surgeons who are active in Craniofacial surgery and who have made worthwhile contributions in this field of endeavor;
  • have had at least six months' training in Craniofacial surgery at a program recognized by the Society;
  • have been in active practice of Craniofacial surgery for a minimum of five years;
  • have submitted a list of operations performed in the previous two years which have been approved by the Society. A certain percentage of these operations should have been of the intracranial type;
  • have submitted a list of members on their clinical team;
  • have published at least two papers on the subject of craniofacal surgery;
  • be an active member of a major medical specialty in their respective country;
  • under exceptional circumstances, the above requirements may be waived by the officers and the Council.

Rights and Duties:

  • may vote, hold office, and serve on committees of the Society;
  • if absent for two consecutive meetings, shall be dropped from membership roster unless the absence is excused by the Officers and the Council;
  • after retirement from active practice, Active members shall not be required to pay dues or attend meetings. However, they shall pay a registration fee in the amount determined by the Council for meetings which they attend. They may become Life members (see current bylaws, Article II, section 11A for Life membership application).

3) Associate Members

Qualifications: Associate Members shall:

  • be individuals who have contributed to the understanding and/or treatment of disorders of the craniofacial region. They need not necessarily be actively engaged in the practice of craniofacial surgery. However, in many instances, membership in this category will be considered a necessary step before becoming an active member.

Rights and Duties:

  • may attend all scientific meetings and social functions of the Society;
  • may not serve on committees of the Society;
  • cannot vote, hold office, or attend meetings of the Officers and Council;
  • if absent for three consecutive meetings, shall be dropped form membership roster unless the absence is excused by the Officers and Council;
  • after retirement from practice, Associate members shall not be required to pay dues or attend meetings. However, they shall pay a registration fee in the amount determined by the Council for meetings which they attend. They may become Life members (see current bylaws, Article II, section 11A for Life membership application).

4) Research Members

Qualifications: Research Members:

  • shall be individuals who have contributed to craniofacial research in the field of craniofacial biology including orthodontics morphology, genetics, therapeutics, anthropology or related disciplines;
  • shall be legally qualified according to the following standards indicative of a serious interest in craniofacial research;
  • shall hold a PhD, MD, DVM, DDS, or DO degree or other advanced academic degrees in a field related to craniofacial research
  • shall have published at least 2 research papers on craniofacial biology or craniofacialsurgery;
  • membership is not restricted to citizens of any specific country;
  • under exceptional circumstances, the Officers and Council may waive the above requirements.

Rights and Duties:

  • may attend all scientific meetings and social functions of the Society;
  • may vote, hold office, and serve on committees of the Society;
  • shall pay annual dues set by the Executive Committee;
  • if absent for two consecutive meetings, shall be dropped from the membership roster unless the absence is excused by the Officers and Council.

5) Craniofacial Orthodontic Members

Qualifications: Craniofacial Orthodontic Members:

  • shall be individuals who contribute to craniofacial surgery in the field of orthodontics;
  • shall have received accredited training as an orthodontist;
  • shall hold a DDS, DMD, or other advanced academic degree related to the field of orthodontics;
  • shall have published at least 2 research papers related to craniofacial orthodontics;
  • shall have been in active practice in craniofacial orthodontics for a minimum of 5 years;
  • shall submit a list of orthognathic and craniofacial cases which they treated in the previous 2 years;
  • should be associated with a craniofacial team and list the members;
  • shall submit two letters of recommendation from members of the society and one from the director of their craniofacial team;
  • shall be an active member of a major medical society in their country;
  • membership is not restricted to citizens of any specific country;
  • under exceptional circumstances, the above requirements may be waived by the Officers and Council.

Rights and Duties:

  • may attend all scientific meetings and social functions of the Society;
  • may vote, hold office, and serve on committees of the Society;
  • shall pay annual dues set by the Executive Committee;
  • if absent for 2 consecutive meetings, shall be dropped from the membership roster unless the absence is excused by the Officers and Council.

6) Corresponding Members

  • This category shall be reserved for those individuals who are members of a craniofacial team, but are not involved in surgery.
  • Rights and duties are identical to those described for associate members.

7) Honorary Members

  • Honorary members shall be individuals whom the Society deems worthy of special honor because of notable contribution in the field of craniofacial surgery, or because of long activity in the interests of the Society. They are not required to attend meetings and they cannot vote or hold office in the Society.

8) Life Membership

  • Members who are retired from active practice may be transferred to this category upon application to the Secretary/Treasurer of the Society.
  • Life members may have previously been active, associate, or corresponding members.
  • If members in this category were previously active members, they may attend business meetings but may not vote.
  • Any member in this category need not attend meetings or pay dues, but will be required to pay registration fees for meetings they attend. In addition, they cannot hold office.

The Council serves as administrative authority of the Society and shall consider its activities and determine its policies.

II. Application for Membership

Completed applications for Active and Associate membership must be submitted to the Secretary-Treasurer by a date three months before the Executive Business Meeting.

Active and Associate members may submit a request in writing to the Secretary-Treasurer for transfers of membership categories.

All new members shall be sent a certificate of membership signed by the President, Secretary-Treasurer, and Council, and a copy of the bylaws of the Society.

III. Application Fees
